Components
These are the main applications that run inside of Joomla! They usually have controls that are accessed from the backend administration. The administration section is frequently used to create, read, update & delete records in the database. With the data in place, it can then be accessed from the front end of the site for your normal visitors, or registered users or staff to access.

Modules
These are the boxes that can be placed in different module positions in Joomla! You can have multiple modules on a page, and they can read the data from your custom components to display to your visitors.
