Zoids R Us

They Live

At first I wasn't sure what way to react after seeing the Boston Dynamics "Robo-Dog-a-Saurus". It's clearly calibrated and set up to do impressive things, but I'm guessing that battery life might be an issue if you want one to go round and do "morning after" cleaning of bottles & pizza boxes!

Quantum Computing - "Oh Boy!"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-38811255

"A modular design is absolutely critical in order to realize a quantum computer with truly phenomenal processing power".

Disclaimer: I know nothing about quantum mechanics, quantum entanglement or 'spooky action at a distance'

Quantum Leap was a favourite show of mine in my early teens. Quantum Paint was my main art program on the Atari ST for a long time. Quantim of Solace.... erm. Quantum Computing is something I looked at last year and was trying to grasp some of the concepts.

AppGameKit - Raspberry Pi

- Tested: Windows, Linux & Raspberry Pi

The AppGameKit is a game engine that allows the creating of games, apps, interactive stuff etc. in a Linux, Windows & Mac host application. It can then cross compile it's output to different platforms and devices.

The full version can output to various platforms including Linux, Windows, Mac, Android, Blackberry & iOS. The Raspberry Pi version is limited to exporting to it's own native platform.

That's not really a big deal when you can still broadcast via your WiFi network to Android & iOS devices for testing on external hardware. I'm assuming it will let you import projects created on the Pi to the full desktop versions for cross platform compiling.

Minecraft :: Pi Edition

The Raspian OS comes with Minecraft - Pi Edition pre-installed. This is certainly a bonus for someone who has never played Minecraft before, although it's pushing the limits of the hardware to expect anything too heroic out of the performance.

Whilst not being a UX nirvana, the real beauty of Minecraft on the Pi is that Python scripts can be injected in to the game while it is running. This is a really great way for kids (and the grown up kids too), to learn about programming and how code can be used to create objects, loops, conditional statements, variables, attributes and so forth.

Learn to program with the Raspberry Pi

Now is a great time to learn how to code!

The Raspberry Pi is a fully functional miniture computer. It's major appeal has been it's attractive price point (£25 - £30) matched with the Open Source based Raspian Operating System.

It allows for an easy way to start learning Linux. The Raspian OS itself is based on the popular Debian distribution, and offers an attractive desktop environment along with some education applications pre-installed.

With the Offical Desktop Startup Kit you can be up and running in next to no time at all. This comes with a pre-installed image of Raspian which can save some headaches if you have never had the experience of writing an OS to a MicroSD card.
